Faktor Pendukung Terjadinya Milk Fever Pada Sapi

Penyakit Milk Fever Juga sering disebut parturient paresis, sering terjadi terutama pada sapi perah tepat sebelum atau setelah melahirkan. Penyakit ini cenderung terjadi pada sapi indukan dewasa yang berproduksi susu tinggi, dan kadang-kadang juga bisa terjadi pada sapi dara yang baru pertama kali beranak atau pada indukan sapi pedaging.

Pada kondisi milk fever, hilangnya kalsium tubuh secara mendadak bisa menyebabkan sapi pingsan pada saat melahirkan. Hewan yang mengalami milk fever, tubuhnya akan memerlukan mineral kalsium lebih banyak dan mengambilnya dari dari jaringan tubuh untuk memproduksi susu. Kalsium yang diambil dari jaringan tubuh ini kebutuhannya lebih banyak daripada jumlah kalsium yang bisa diambil dari tulang ataupun dari pakan yang ada di saluran pencernaanya. Pada waktu-waktu normal, tulang bertindak sebagai tempat penyimpanan kalsium berlebih di dalam tubuh, tubuh sapi akan mampu mengambil sedikit kalsium dari tempat penyimpanan kalsium di dalam tulang pada saat kekurangan. Namun pada sapi yang secara mendadak memproduksi susu dalam jumlah yang banyak, maka simpanan kalsium dalam tulang akan mejadi tidak cukup. Kekurangan kalsium yang serius tersebut memiliki efek yang fatal pada tubuh karena kalsium diperlukan untuk fungsi otot dan syaraf.

Dalam tubuh hewan ternak kadar kalsium dalam darah dikontrol oleh banyak faktor. Faktor-faktor ini di antaranya adalah hubungan timbal balik antara kalsium dan fosfor yang terkandung dalam pakan, jumlah fosfor di dalam aliran darah, kadar vitamin D di dalam tubuh, serta berfungsi baiknya kelenjar paratiroid dan tiroid sebagai organ yang memainkan peran penting dalam proses metabolisme hewan. Kadar kalsium dalam darah akan turun secara drastis saat induk sapi memasuki masa laktasi, jika kondisi di dalam tubuh serba normal, kalsium yang hilang biasanya akan dapat digantikan oleh tubuh dalam waktu beberapa jam saja. Kelenjar paratiroid mengirimkan sinyal melalui hormon tertentu (dibantu oleh vitamin D) untuk melepaskan cadangan kalsium di dalam tulang. Namun jika kelenjar paratiroid tidak aktif, maka sinyal tadi tidak akan terkirim, dan kalsium yang tersimpan tidak dapat dipindahkan ke dalam aliran darah untuk menanggulangi kekurangan.

Aktivitas kelenjar paratiroid dipengaruhi oleh laju masuknya kalsium dari pakan. Sapi yang mengkonsumsi pakan tinggi kalsium seperti alfalfa atau leguminosa lain selama masa kering sebelum melahirkan lebih sering terkena milk fever karena tubuhnya mendapatkan akses langsung terhadap mineral kalsium, dan tubuh akan merespon dengan menganggap bahwa sedang berada pada kondisi berlebihan kalsium. Absorbsi kalsium dari usus telah cukup untuk mempertahankan kadar kalsium dalam darah saat sapi sedang dalam masa kering. Aktivitas Pertukaran kalsium antara tulang dan darah mejadi sangat sedikit, dan kelenjar paratiroid menjadi tidak terlalu aktif.

Untuk berfungsi normalnya kelenjar paratiroud, maka asupan kalsium dan fosfor dalam pakan harus berada pada rasio yang tepat. Sapi dalam masa kering yang memakan pakan rumput yang baik dengan kadar kalsium dan fosfor yang seimbang akan memiliki rasio kalsium dan fosfor yang normal dalam tubuh, dan kondisi tersebut mengurangi kerentanan terkena milk fever saat sapi mulai memproduksi susu setelah melahirkan.

Usia juga memiliki pengaruh yang besar terhadap tingkat kerentanan sapi terkena milk fever. Tubuh hewan yang lebih muda akan dapat melakukan mobilisasi cadangan kalsium dengan lebih cepat dari tulang. Saat sapi mulai menua, kalsium menjadi terikat lebih kuat pada tulang sehingga lebih sulit untuk dikeluarkan tepat waktu pada saat sapi kekurangan. Seiring bertambahnya usia sapi, kemampuan tubuh dalam menyerap kalsium dari dalam usus juga akan semakin menurun jika dibandingkan dengan hewan yang masih muda. Kebanyakan sapi yang telah dewasa cenderung memproduksi susu lebih banyak, bahkan mencapai puncak produksi pada kelahiran ketiga dan keempat, hal tersebut juga turut menjadi faktor predisposisi lain dari kasus milk fever. Sehingga sapi dewasa yang berproduksi susu banyak memiliki risiko tertinggi terhadap penurunan kadar kalsium jika dibandingkan sapi yang baru pertama melahirkan.
